MedRespond, which won first place at the inaugural Medical Capital Innovation Competition in April, combines artificial intelligence, search and streaming media to enable health care enterprises to provide personalized, relevant and scalable engagement solutions for their patients, clients and their families, according to a news release. MedRespond anticipates hiring several employees with its expansion to the Global Center, focusing on expanding its content development resources, according to the release. "The reaction from the Cleveland medical community to MedRespond's conversational patient engagement platform has been tremendous," said Virginia Flavin Pribanic, MedRespond's president and CEO, in a prepared statement. "Our Cleveland office will allow us to focus on the development of multiple client projects and connect with Northeast Ohio's vibrant entrepreneurial community." The Medical Capital Innovation Competition awarded MedRespond $50,000 and access to health care mentors, industry collaborators and customers in Cleveland. Since the grand prize win in April, Pribanic has worked with Matthew Miller, BioEnterprise's vice president of health information technology and services, to lay the foundation for MedRespond in Cleveland. BioEnterprise recently was named to lead strategy at the Global Center. After his service at NIMH, he returned to Boston where he developed and directed a NIDA-funded inter-university research center on clinical and nonclinical studies in opiate addiction at Harvard (Mclean Hospital) and in the Department of Pharmacology at Boston University. His clinical studies at McLean Hospital involved translational and clinical outcome studies with naltrexone in patients with opiate addiction. Dr. Meyer went on to become Chairman of Psychiatry at University of Connecticut Health Center where he developed and directed the NIAAA-funded research center focused on clinical and some nonclinical studies of alcohol dependence (1978-1993). In 1993, the Center provided part of the data to FDA in support of oral naltrexone in the treatment of alcoholism. The alcohol research center has been funded continuously since 1978, and is now in its 34nd year, being led now by individuals recruited and trained by Dr. Meyer. In both research centers (in Boston and at UConn), the focus was on multidisciplinary research in patients and in animal models. In terms of the policy ramifications of his work, Dr. Meyer has served as a consultant to the White House drug abuse offices across three administrations, and he has been a grant reviewer and/or review committee chair for NIAAA, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and NIDA. Administratively, in addition to serving as Department Chair at the University of Connecticut, and as research center director (X’s 2), he has also served as Executive Dean at UConn (where he oversaw the planning for a successful GCRC application), and as VP Medical Affairs and Executive Dean at George Washington University Medical Center. Following his retirement from GW, Dr. Meyer established Best Practice Project Management, Inc., with four colleagues. The company provided consulting and project management services principally to small, mid-sized and non-US-based pharmaceutical companies; and it convened a number of consensus development conferences in controversial areas of psychopharmacology. The conferences brought together scientists from industry, government (FDA, NIH) and academia, and resulted in the publication of summary papers that have had a significant impact on the field. Dr. Meyer directed this effort. Since 2010, Dr. Meyer has been Professor of Psychiatry at Penn State Hershey Medical Center where he has initiated several projects related to his interest in addiction and in the assessment of suicidal ideation and behavior.
